well the last place on earth where i would dare try a dosa would be the “airport”, but surprisingly it was not bad. the dosa was crisp and more of the tamilian kind (which i like), well they could do away with the sugar that they add, because you are left with a little sweet after taste.

they are less greasy (which is good, i guess they’re catering to the international dosa hunters :-P).
the chutney thoug

h, is quite bad and so is the sambar (i don’t know what you can have the dosa with).

well overall you could give this dosa a shot (ok just use the white ‘coconut’ chutney, it still edible) because i have not found anything worth eating at the airport.

airports/airplanes are usually associated with boring and stale food, but i had heard good things about the dosa at the TimeOut Bar at the Bangalore International Airport.
this place is located bang opposite gates 2&3 of the terminal and looks very understated. their mysore masala dosa on the other hand is the complete opposite ! it’s beautiful to say the least.

it’s made by the most unassuming chef which makes the final product even more deceptive ! its longer than the average ‘darshini dosa’ and has a beautiful golden glisten on the outside.

it’s also thinner than the udupi dosa, but as i tear into it my mouth is watering. it looks that good ! i put the dosa in my mouth and it just melts ! its worlds away from what i expected. it’s accompanied by a coconut chutney that has evidently been taken straight out of the fridge (because its cold) but it strangely complemented the hot dosa and the sambar wasn’t bad either. all in all it was the perfect dosa i needed as i waited for the flight boarding line to dwindle down :P

i would definitely recommend it as a quick airport snack the next time you’re in BIAL. we all know how appalling in-flight meals can be on short hauls these days :P

taste: 7.5/10 ambience: 6/10 (its an airport! go figure :P)
price: 5/10 (same reason as above :P)

oh this TimeOut Bar is one of my favourite pass time at the airport. i love the mysore plain cheese dosa here. the place has got it’s own charm and there’s something very intriguing about the dosa batter. i’ve waited for 25 mins almost every time and i still always make it a point to go back there. it sure is very expensive, but tell me one thing, what isn’t expensive at airports ??

i would rate this dosa high, simply for the pleasure i derive right from waiting in queue to pay, waiting in queue to eat, suggesting my own little customisation while the chef prepares my “crisp” dosa, to eventually eating the dosa oozing with cheese (the mozzarella that stretches, like the ones on pizzas ?!) oh ! i cant stop.

i think u must just go try it.

this dosa always makes me smile and say CHEEEEESE !

taste: 7.5/10 ambience: 6.5/10 price: i wish it was much cheaper that’s all i can say :-D

i remember this place when it was just a small trolley around the corner of cambridge layout with people queuing up to grab a dosa and it was this perfect quick dosa you could find which was clean and totally value for money and one day it just vanishes and after I think almost a year returns as this small corner shop next to the Sai Baba mandir.

well nothing much seemed to have changed expect

that it’s a proper shop now. it still tastes the same. its not a GREAT dosa but its just average - i’m not sure about others but it does leave an itch in my throat and am not sure why. but the fact it’s quick (if u get to order that is) and clean could be tried if your around that area.

taste: 6/10 ambience: 6/10 price: 6/10

this is a little shop in cambridge layout that has slowly graduated from a cart to a ‘dosa camp’ to a little quaint shop ! i’ve eaten at the original cart/dosa camp and must say that the dosa was slightly better in the old days (old days being 4-5 years back :P). this place does not have a vast menu, around 5 types of dosa and then the thatte idli !

the dosa was average, not much to write about there, but this place has to be visited for its collateral damage - THE THATTE IDLI ! wah wah, soaked in ghee, it’s some heavy stuff. it comes with a fluorescent, radioactive looking green chutney that really looks far better than it tastes (actually there was no real taste). the IDLI itself, just melt-in-the-mouth stuff machaa !!! belt a few and you’ll leave a happy man or woman, as the case may be :P

taste: 5/10 for Dosa and 8/10 for the thatte idli
ambience: very street, 6/10
price: a reasonable 7/10

it was my first time here. the first impression i got was that it was a clean, hygienic place (which is important nowadays in bangalore considering the flu and BBMP strikes across ;-p)

anyway, didn’t really feel the dosa had any taste really. the batter was too bland for my liking. and i would agree with george the oil from the dosa did leave an irritation in my throat as well !

what i highly recommend is to try the thatte idlis here, which are absolutely heavenly. warm, wet and soft (don’t get ideas i’m talking about the idli here). melts in your mouth (i said.. don’t get dirty ideas !!).

so if you find bidadi too far fetched for a thatte idli, this is the next best place !

taste: dosa 5/10 and thatte idli 8/10
ambience: 7/10 for the clean and hygienic feel.
price: the boys paid for me so i guess 10/10 ;-D

this was one of the most highly recommended dosa joints on our page ! when i first arrived there, it was clearly popular and had hoards of people standing outside to get in. this crowd was managed by a highly efficient gentleman at the door ! once we got in it was a different story however. you could never tell that there were at least 50-70 people still waiting outside to get in. peaceful (by dosa joint standards :P) service was quick and the dosa was i’m

sad to say below par. don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t all bad but for all the hype and the waiting, oh the waiting ! i was a little let down. all in all, if you have a couple of hours to spare for a dosa of just ‘alright’ taste, this is the place to be !

taste - 6/10 ambience - 7/10 price - 7/10

well from the time we started LSD i have heard of this place and people asking us to go there for their famous dosa.
well we finally did it….’we went ‘…’we WAITED’…. (well managed I must say by a man who took numbers and gave everyone their individual seats) …and ‘we ordered’ for our famous dosa…

well i must say i was not too impressed with it and was in fact quite similar with what i ate in my college my hostel, we not complaining but not bad not too great either the dosa was uneven, not too crisp, way too oily, loved the chutney
i don’t know if i had too much of expectation with this place but then was not too impressed.

taste 5/10 ambience 7/10 price 7/10

i guess every restaurant has bad days. i have fond memories of when i visited this place for the first time right from the taste, to the service, to the ambience. so although this time the experience and the taste was bad, i’m gonna be a bit bias and rate my first experience of the place. i absolutely loved the crisp oily doses and the chutney they serve with it. their vadas are brilliant too ;-) i love the ambience and service, it’s got character and that’s what i love !

janatha was again a slice of old bangalore. tucked in central malleswaram, full of hustle and bustle which i like.. but the dosa wasn’t to die for. it was way too oily and after just one mouthful i didn’t feeling like going

further. although, i’m not sure if i was being that finicky because i’d just had some amazing dosa at CTR. either way, i didn’t enjoy it much.

ambience: 6/10 taste: 4/10 price: 6/10

well it was next in the line and after you had the CTR, the standards were set high. well we found the place, looked old, we walked in and to our surprise it was quite empty than what we expected.

you have the self service and the private service room. we went with the self service (to save tim) and got the dosa after a small wait. well the dosa here was quite average, and was too greasy for anyone’s liking i am sure, i could in fact feel the oil drip down my throat to the extent that I really could not finish the entire dosa.

ambiance wise it had a quite a old charm look of some sorts, but then a lot of open space inside just makes the place look more empty. you could miss this one for the dosa, just walk for 2 mins and you will find CTR for it.

ambience: 6/10 taste: 5/10 price: 6/10

i quite liked the ambience, it had alot of character and charm to it. certain very old-school bangalore characteristics are observed in the behaviour of the staff as well as the decor.

dosa ? what dosa ? we just drank a glass of oil here.. ;-)

when I was a school-boy my mum would take me out shopping with her and two places we just HAD to visit every time we came to commercial street were bhagath rams and woody’s. however, my first visit to the place after years instead of evoking nostalgia made me wish i’d never come here again since it ruined the reputation i’d built for it throughout my childhood ! the place is a ghost town cafe now and the dosa was hardly anything to write home about.

ambience: 5/10 taste: 5/10 price: 5/10

man “if you have lost the art of good south indian cuisine don’t try too hard to regain it “, that’s exactly what i want to say about woody’s . once known for its yummy food and also being part of the legendary chain of “woodlands hotels“ this visit was quite disappointing for me. to top it all it had just 10 people in the entire place including us, i won’t go with the detail description of the dosa, but rather go straight to my verdict..

ambiance: sadly is nice but due to the lack of life in it - 4/10 taste: 4/10 price: 5/10

it was truly disappointing to see such a vast difference between what woody’s has turned into today vs the childhood memories i’ve always had of it. the dosa was below average, the “cheese” on the ‘cheese masala dosa’ was it’s only saving grace. but then again, even if u put cheese on bhindi or bengan… it will taste great ;-)

dosa here has always had a certain standard that has not dropped or gone up if i may say from the time i have known of the place.. and it suits the tastes of the general public, which by the way can be noticed with the crowd at the joint. they add the “red chutney“ in to the dosa, which is a little too garlicky for my taste and a bit greasy as well, (but they serve the oil less ones if you request for it) but nevertheless adiga’s at dickinson road is better the other adiga’s for dosa in the city (well have not tried too many), do drop in if its near your office or if your passing by it.

ambiance 4/10 taste: 6/10 price: 6/10

adigas is popular for a reason. cheap, quick and reasonably tasty food. they don’t promise you anything extraordinary and that’s exactly what the dosa was. the place is very basic in terms of ambience and the dosa was just alright. all in all, a good place to run in an out of if you’re in a hurry in the morning to get to the office.

to receive a valuation of 200 crores from new silk route partners for a 51% stake in the company and opening 200 outlets in the country is pure genius ! the owner vasudev has taken QSR dosa chains to a whole new level with this valuation. i have tried adiga’s around the city and the taste is absolutely the same - which in my opinion is the key to his success. this is one dosa on which the law of diminishing marginal utility does NOT apply ! i have this dosa almost every single day of my life. the one on dickenson road is a hop skip and jump away from home and therefore has turned into my evening “adda”. i love this dosa, ask for a plain dosa “roast” and u’ll love what u eat !

ambience: 6/10 (since it’s my adda) taste: 8/10 price: 8/10

CTR certainly lived up to all the hype it’s gotten ! in my opinion the best dosa we’ve tasted so far. the batter tasted divine and the dosa was crisp and perfectly fried. the ambience of the place was old bangalore-ish which i loved but even for a patient bloke like me nearly 20 mins to serve up a plain dosa was pushing it ! but it was definitely worth the wait once i tasted the dosa !

ambience: 7/10 taste: 8.5/10 price: 7/10

ahaa..finally CTR after all the requests sent to us to visit the place.. and i must say was not at all disappointing. dosas here are yummy, one of the better ones we’ve had so far. it reminded me a lot of the “davangere benne dosa” it was buttery (i guess that made it more yum), it was crisp and the right size which, by the way leaves you enough room to have another. well i tried the set dosa next and it was good as well, it may look a bit thick, but was in fact very soft and tasty as well. they don’t give you sambar just two kinds of chutney for the dosas. the only disappointing point in the restaurant is that the service is very slow and that was quite frustrating especially when the dosa is so good, you really wonder if you can wait for another one. the plates were like these plastic ones (more like cafeteria kinds ) so i guess that takes some points away from the ambiance or the feel of the place. but again.. dosas here are worth the wait…

ambiance: 7/10 taste: 8/10 price: 7/10

CTR has been the best dosa we have tried so far. it was loaded with butter, extremely crisp and served with two kinds of chutney; both delicious. a true dosa connoisseur believes dosas are meant to be eaten with chutney and not sambar as served in most restaurants. i guess CTR understands this better than no other.

overall, the dosa was definitely worth the 25 min wait !

so i went to hyderabad last weekend and a friend of mine who follows our blog decided to take me to a joint which serves a unique dosa that he claims is only available in hyderabad !

we went to a place called “chutneys”, the interiors of which are typically andhra style, a la bangalore’s nandhinis or nagarjunas. i ordered their special “steamed dosa”.

although i have no idea how its prepared apart from the fact that its steamed, to me it just tasted like a dosa without any oil. nothing extraordinary. however what makes the dosa unique is that it’s served with a little bowl of thick jaggery syrup which is quite yum! and to boot there are 6 other types of chutneys that are on the table all of them laced with killer chillis of course. but hey, when in andhra one must embrace the chilli !

overall the dosa experience was not half bad. although i won’t be going back to hyderabad for that as much as the biryani (no, we don’t eat ONLY dosas) in the old city :D
